Today we’re going to talk about headings.

Headings are handy little, SEO-rich tools for formatting your blog posts and pages.

Properly formatting a blog post may seem like a trivial matter, but in all honesty, search engine rankings are dependent on judging the relevancy of a particular post. The relevancy of an article can easily be determined by using the headings and sub-headings of that article.

This is how headings are used to give you an SEO boost.

The Basics

Depending on your blog’s theme settings, your headings may appear in a different font.

In Kalatu, you can adjust your blog’s heading font by following these steps:

1. Log into your Kalatu dashboard

2. Select Theme Settings from the dashboard menu

3. Under the Fonts section, change the font for the “Title Font”

Headings range in size from Heading 1 (biggest) to Heading 6 (smallest).

The most common headings that our Support Blog uses are Headings 2, 3, and 4.

Heading 1 (H1) is “the big one”. It is your blog post’s title. In Kalatu, using H1 is not all that necessary, because we automatically format the title of your blog post into an SEO-friendly hotspot.

It may not look like the title of your blog post is the biggest, but it is definitely the most targeted for SEO purposes.

You may still use the H1 tag if you wish, as it will bring a lot of attention to the words you use with it.

Heading 1 looks like this:

Heading 1

Heading 2 (H2) is considered to be the equivalent of a chapter in a book. Heading 2 covers one specific topic, and often serve to break up large paragraphs of text.

Heading 2 looks like this:

Heading 2

Heading 3 (H3) would title sub-sections of the particular “chapter” you are writing about. Perhaps these would organize topics within the chapter.

Heading 3 looks like this:

Heading 3

Headings 4, 5, and 6 (H4, H5, H6) would be used if you are creating further subsections of the topics within your blog post.

They appear like this:

Heading 6

Here at the Support Blog, we use Headings in a slightly unconventional manner.

We often jump back and forth between headings and use them to make a statement.

Why Use Headings?

Headings, as previously mentioned, have enormous SEO power.

We’ll go over that in more detail, plus a few other reasons why using headings in a blog post is important.

1. Organize your blog post

Headings help organize your post into main ideas, much like how you organize an essay or report into paragraphs and topics.

This helps you organize your blog post in a logical way, allowing it to flow naturally from topic to topic.

Without headings, it is very easy to “ramble” and jump from point to point with no rhyme or reason.

2. Indicate key points

When I am looking up a specific topic and find an article to read, the first thing I look at are the headings within the post.

Let’s say I am researching a specific recipe. On recipe blogs, the blogger often writes about the background of the recipe, what made them want to make it, the trial and error of making the recipe, and so on…before they actually give you the recipe.

Now, that is GREAT for the blogger’s audience (and that is who they are blogging to), but all I want is that recipe. I would then scroll down until I found a heading that indicated that the recipe will follow.

Some of your readers may do the same, so make the different topics within your post easy to find and navigate.

3. SEO-friendly

As mentioned before, headings are a great way to get a little SEO boost.

Headings allow you to tell the search engines which pieces of text are the most relevant to your blog post. This then makes it much easier for the search engines to filter through all the TRILLIONS of blog posts on the web and deem yours the best fit.

Using your keywords in blog post headings gives you an even BIGGER SEO boost.

4. Attractive appearance

Let’s be honest. Blog posts with headings just look more attractive.

Blog posts are more organized, easier to navigate, and appealing to the eye. All of these go hand-in-hand and make your blog post look like a winner.
