SEO Bootcamp: Is Bing Down for the Count?

As far as search engines go, Google has been dominating the market for the better part of 15 years.

Who can disagree with that?

With nearly 70% of the desktop search engine market share, it’s more than obvious why there is such a heavy focus on Google when we are optimizing our websites for the search engines.

SEO practices target Google almost exclusively. But…

Should you ignore Bing when it comes to SEO?

In our professional opinion (putting our love and adoration for Google aside), there is no reason to count Bing out.

Besides the fact that virtually every website out there is vying for Google’s attention like the middle child in a family of 17 kids, here are some things you probably didn’t know…

Bing

Bing is a creation of Microsoft, and was relaunched and rebranded in 2009.

Remember, Google is king, but at under 70%, Google does not own 100% of the market share, therefore you should not place 100% of your eggs in the glorious Google basket.

Bing controls about 12% of global search engine searches, the most predominant use being in the United States. 12% is nothing to scoff at. Out of the

trillions of total search engine searches that happen annually, 12% is a larger number than you may think.

Similarly to Google, Bing loves quality content, social signals, on-page optimization, and lots of quality backlinks.

The most notable difference between Bing and Google is that Bing places an extreme importance on keyword density. For Google, keyword density has nearly become a thing of the past. But when you are looking to rank higher and quicker in Bing, pay attention to your keyword planning and using those keywords frequently!

You get bonus points with Bing if you use keywords in your blog post permalinks and domain name.

Bing also enjoys blog posts with a larger word count, a reduced bounce rate, and the use of quality links to external sites.

And here is where it gets good…

Apple officially made its default search engine for Siri in 2013.

Yeah, you heard me. Somehow, the common public was not widely aware of this (personally, we feel like we have been under a rock).

When an Applie iPhone or iPad user searches the web using Siri on their device, Bing.com is the search engine used.

With nearly a billion Apple iOS devices being used worldwide today….it’s safe to say that Bing is a larger part of our lives than we realize.

Verifying Your Kalatu Blog with Bing Webmaster Tools

You think Google Webmaster Tools is the only tool you should use to verify your Kalatu blog? Think again.

Although it is never required for you to verify your website to be successful as a blogger, it can only help.

Verifying your website in Bing Webmaster Tools allows you access to real-time search statistics from Bing, lets you see what keywords are the most effective on your blog, as well as insights into crawling and indexing activity on your blog.

You just have to have a custom domain mapped to your Kalatu blog. If you do not have a custom domain, verifying ownership of your Kalatu blog will not be possible.

1. Go to Bing Webmaster (create a Microsoft account if you have not already done so).

2. Enter in your domain name, and then you will be on the site verification page.

3. You will have 3 options. You will use Option #3, “Add CNAME record to DNS“.

4. Select your domain provider from the drop down menu (ours is GoDaddy, so the screenshot is from there).

5. Log into your DNS account. If you are using GoDaddy, go to “DNS Zone Files” and add a new record. The record will be a CNAME (Alias) record.

6. Bing will provide you a series of numbers and letters, as well as the value “bing.verify.com”. In the “Host“, paste the series of numbers letters (shown in the screenshot attached to this ticket). In the “Points To“, paste “verify.bing.com”.Bing Webmaster

7. Click Finish and be sure to save your changes.

8. Go back to the site verification page in Bing, and click “Verify“.

Our website was able to be published in this fashion, and we now have access to all the goodies Bing Webmaster Tools has to offer.
